Math- We have started our Geometry Unit. Students are spending a lot of time in class classifying polygons by their specific characteristics. Remember to take home your math journal every night and study those polygons. Over the next two weeks, we will wrap up polygons and move into coordinate grids.
PLEASE make sure your child takes their math journal home each night. Since we do not have a text book, this is their BEST resource for step by step instructions if they forget how to do something. I give very detailed, step by step, notes in class. Also, I keep the same math journal they keep so anyone is welcome to borrow my journal to copy or look over at any time.
Social Studies - We have started quarter 2 with social studies. This quarter will focus on the Revolutionary War. We will talk about how independence was gained in the United States. Students will work in small groups to complete a short colonies project that they will present to the class. Next week we will do some fun *TAXING* activities - be sure to ask them about it :)
ELA - In reading, we will be placing a strong focus on how an author structures information within a text. While reading non-fiction texts, we will ask questions about how the structure of a text contributes to your overall understanding. Students should be reading non-fiction texts as often as possible. In class, students are spending time reading Scholastic News Magazines with a partner. Remember to keep reading every night!
Writing - Over the next two weeks, the focus will be to practice writing opinion pieces. They will support a point of view on a topic with facts and information. We want to remember that when writing opinion pieces trying to persuade someone, we need to back up our ideas with facts, not more opinions! :)
